Find Your Undertone for Foundation: Why Veins Mislead

Published 27 October 2026 · Foundation Shades

The quickest way to identify your undertone is to look at how foundations you’ve already worn went wrong. A shade that turned orange or yellow points one way, a shade that turned pink points the other. The vein and jewellery tests can add a hint, but neither one is reliable on its own.

The vein and jewellery tests

Here’s how each test is meant to read:

TestCoolWarmNeutral
Veins on your inner wrist, in natural lightBlue or purpleGreenA mix of both
Jewellery that suits you bestSilverGoldBoth

Both tests are free and take a minute. The jewellery test asks a question close to the one you care about: which colours sit well next to your skin. That’s why our own No match yet? quiz uses it as one of its three questions.

Why the vein test misleads

Veins are a poor stand-in for undertone. They can look blue even though blood is red, and four things set their colour. These are how skin scatters and absorbs light, the blood’s oxygen level, the vessel’s size and depth, and how the eye reads colour.

Only part of that list is about your skin, so we read vein colour as a loose hint about undertone at best.

The test has two more practical gaps:

We suggest using your veins as a tiebreaker, never as the answer.

The test that tells you more: foundations you’ve already worn

Every foundation that looked wrong on you is a result you can use. Think about how it went wrong in daylight, a few hours after you put it on. We suggest reading it like this:

What went wrongUndertone to try next
It looked orange, yellow or too goldenCooler, or neutral
It looked pink or rosyWarmer, or neutral
It looked grey or ashy, or every shade looks either too pink or too yellowOlive
It looked a little off but you can’t say howNeutral

A warm shade on a cool or neutral undertone can make your makeup look orange. That’s why the first row says to go cooler. Our No match yet? quiz uses the same reading of a bad match, and maps “grey or ashy” to olive.

One caution before you use a past shade this way. A shade that was too deep can also look orange, so check the depth first. Our guide to foundation that looks orange walks through telling the two apart.

What undertones brands list

Brands don’t sort shades into three groups. Here is how the 6,727 usable shades in our data are listed. Most listings come from 2021 retailer descriptions, and some from brands’ own websites in October 2026.

Listed undertoneShades
Warm2,121
Neutral1,544
Cool1,124
Neutral-warm329
Olive249
Neutral-cool205
Not listed1,155

Warm is the most common listing, at almost a third of all shades. And olive is scarce: only 249 shades carry it. If you’re olive, expect to compare shades listed warm or neutral as well.

Turning your undertone into a shade

Undertone is half the answer. Depth, how light or deep your skin is, matters as much, and a mismatch in depth can look like an undertone problem.

If you already wear a shade that works, type it into the shade finder. Each match says whether it reads warmer or cooler than yours, and shows the brand’s own undertone listing next to it. That saves you working out your undertone at all.

If you’re starting from nothing, the No match yet? page asks you to pick your depth from real swatches, then asks three undertone questions. It gives you three shades to sample in each of ten ranges. Test them on your jaw in daylight, using the steps in how to test a foundation match at home.

Questions

If my skin looks pink, what is my undertone?

L’Oréal Paris describes cool undertones as appearing “red, pink, or bluish”. Confirm it with the foundation test above: if warm shades tend to look orange on you, cool is likely right.

What foundation should I use if I have pink undertones?

Look for shades a brand lists as cool or neutral-cool. In our data, Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup lists 19 of its 56 shades as cool, among the most of any range.

How do I tell if my undertone is olive?

A good sign is that most foundations look either too pink or too yellow, or turn grey. Our guide to olive undertone foundation covers the ranges that list olive shades.

How do I find my undertone if I have dark skin?

The same foundation test works at every depth. Brands describe undertones in deep shades too. MAC’s own website describes its deepest Studio Fix Fluid shades, NW60 and NW65, as red, which we group with cool (checked October 2026).

Is MAC NW warm or cool?

MAC’s own website describes NW shades such as NW10 and NW20 as rosy, which reads cool (checked October 2026). Our guide to MAC NC and NW explains the codes in full.

Can an app or AI find my undertone?

Whatever tool you use, check its answer against the foundation test above and a swatch on your jaw. Our guide on whether ChatGPT can find your foundation shade covers what any answer needs.
