Foundation shade finder tools compared
The best foundation shade finder depends on what you start from. If you wear a shade that suits you, a cross-brand finder can turn it into a shortlist in other brands. If you don't, a quiz or a depth chart is the better start. Here's how four free tools compare, checked on 26 October 2026.
| Tool | How it matches | How results are ordered | Shows how close | Colour swatches | Data | Your photo |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Foundation Shades (this site) | Measured colour of each shade, compared with CIEDE2000 | Every one of 109 brands, closest first | Yes: a closeness label, lighter or deeper, warmer or cooler | Yes | Date shown on every product: January 2021, or October 2026 for products checked on the brand’s own website | Read in your browser; never uploaded |
| Findation | Shades people report wearing; says it also measures colour in its own lab | Not ranked by closeness | No | No | Says it has over 11,000 products and 107,000 shades, with products added in 2026 | No photo route |
| Match My Makeup | Brand-to-brand matching, or a skin quiz | Up to 200 results, alphabetical | No closeness label | No | Gives different brand counts on different pages (150, 270+ and 400+) | Its privacy policy says it may collect photographs |
| foundation-shade-finder.com | Photo reader, plus a shade converter using colour data and CIEDE2000 | The 12 closest brands per shade | Shows the colour difference as a number | Yes | Retailer swatches from January 2021 (6,752 shades, 106 brands) | Uploaded and read on its server, then deleted, it says |
Which one to use
- You want the biggest, newest catalogue. Findation says it covers over 11,000 products and adds new launches, so it's more likely to have a 2026 product. It doesn't rank its results or show colour.
- You want a quiz, or lipstick matching too. Match My Makeup has a skin quiz and lip shades. Its matches come in alphabetical order, so check each one.
- You want to see how close each match is, and which way it leans. That's what Foundation Shades does: 6,950 shades ranked by measured colour, with a closeness label and direction on every result. Most of our colours are from January 2021, so a new launch may be missing.
- You want to start from a photo. A photo reading is a rough guide on any site, because light and cameras change colour. Ours runs in your browser and never uploads the photo; try it on No match yet?
What about brand and shop shade finders?
Brands and shops run their own finders, such as Maybelline's and Ulta's. They are useful inside that brand or shop, but they recommend from that brand's range or that shop's stock only. To compare across brands, use a cross-brand finder first and then the brand's own finder to confirm.
How we compared them
We read each site's pages and tried its matching where the site allows it, then wrote down what each one shows. Figures for the other tools are what those tools say about themselves. Any of these can change, so we re-check this page every quarter. If something here is out of date, tell us.
